• The English A1 programme is intended for native or near-native speakers of English.

    The main objectives of this course in the International Baccalaureate are to:

    • teach you to think independently and to express your ideas coherently and correctly both orally and in writing

    • help you develop an appreciation of Anglo-American cultural heritage and a sound critical appreciation of literature by means of a thorough study of the literary works of a number of authors

    • enhance your awareness of cultures outside your own by studying a number of works from the World Literature genre

    The Exam

    The examination is made up of the following components:

    External Assessment70 % Total

    Written paper component50 % +

    Paper 1: A commentary on one of two unseen passages (poetry; prose) (2 hours)25 %

    Paper 2: An essay on the works listed under= 70%

    Part 3 Groups of Works (2 hours)25 %

    Independent study: World Literature and Comparative

    Literature Component20% +

    This involves two papers (one for SL) written under the supervision of the teacher, to be assessed externally.
